If you’ve resolved to boost morale and profits in the year ahead, evaluating your office lighting is a great place to start.

Light quality has been shown to impact workers’ mood and health, both positively and negatively. Bulbs that buzz, fixtures that flicker, and overhead light that’s too bright or too dim can add up to a miserable work environment. However, good lighting design can transform your office into a productive and welcoming environment. Read on to see how updating the lighting in your workplace can help you achieve your goals.

Reduce Absenteeism

Eye strain, headaches, depression. The type of light we work under impacts our health. Natural light is best. It stimulates melatonin production, which leads to a more regulated sleep/wake cycle. While we can’t always offer every employee a window or skylight, bright white light bulbs mimicking natural light are the next best thing. Replacing light fixtures that are too dim/harsh or produce uneven/flickering light can help employees avoid the chronic ailments that bad lighting brings. Better lighting equals healthier and happier employees, which in turn results in less lighting-related sick days.

Increase Productivity

In the office, productivity is king. If your office lighting is too dim, employees may feel sluggish and work slower. On the other hand, too much bright light can lead to overstimulation. Finding the right balance can be tricky and one size does not fit all. In most cases, newer LED lighting can be the best solution for your office. Halogen lights produce drowse-inducing heat. Fluorescent tube lighting can be harsh and uneven. LEDs cast a more even light and come in a variety of brightnesses: bright white light, softer yellow light, and energizing blue light. Programmable and dimmable LEDs also give you more lighting options throughout the day.

Combat Blue Light Agitation

In small doses, blue light can promote focus and boost energy. But too much blue light can lead to insomnia, agitation, and eye strain. Televisions, tablets, computer screens, and phones all cast blue light. Light fixtures with blue-light bulbs add to our daily exposure. If your employees stare at a screen for most of the day, they can reduce or turn off overhead lighting in favor of task lighting. Desk and table lamps help reduce glare and allow workers access to contrasting, softer light.

Reduce Your Carbon Footprint

According to Energy.gov, commercial buildings waste about 30% of the energy they use. Leaving lights on after hours, using energy-hungry halogen lights, and lighting up rooms that are not in use are all contributors. Making the move to the most energy efficient LEDs can help save your company up to 75% in energy usage.

See a Return on Your Investment

Changing out your lighting may seem daunting in terms of time and money. However, by switching to energy-efficient LED lighting, you’ll see a return on your investment. LEDs can have a lifespan of 50,000 to 100,000 hours and use less energy overall, which can save your company as much as $200 per bulb over time. If an overhaul of your lighting system isn’t in the budget, retrofitting is a great option. In addition, M.R. Electricians can help you to identify available incentives so you get the most back from your eco-friendly lighting upgrade.

Enhance Your Company’s Brand

You want to present your company in the best light to investors, potential hires, and clients, as well. Use good lighting to your advantage. Save trendy light fixtures, such as Edison bulbs, for reception areas and other office spaces where they’ll have the most visual impact. Equip floor and desk lamps with light bulbs that emit the right color glow for the ambiance you’re seeking to create. Implementing LED lighting can also enhance your image as an environmentally-conscious organization.

And don't forget about glass office fronts! Aesthtically pleasing and sustainable, glass office walls promote daylight harvesting and enhance employee productivity, too. Want to learn more? Contact us today!
